Leah Houston, M.D.
Physician. Founder. Builder of a self-sovereign healthcare ecosystem.
Mobilizing a trusted healthcare workforce.
Before founding Evercred, Dr. Houston spent over a decade as an Emergency Physician. She worked in high-acuity and high-volume Level 1 trauma centers as well as single coverage rural hospitals across multiple states. Having worked in so many different systems, she saw how broken the administrative process inhibits the delivery of efficient, accessible, high-quality patient care.
She especially noticed that the patient access to care problem is tightly tethered to the physician and clinical healthcare practitioner workforce mobility problem of credentialing. Physicians crushed by inefficient credentialing and onboarding processes are often locked out of opportunities or waste months just to get hired—and paid. Hospital systems, health insurance companies, and other clinical employers also face staffing shortages and revenue losses of up to $15,000 per practitioner per day because of this manual, outdated credentialing bottleneck.
Then came a professional breaking point. Her identity was stolen by a hospital. Her medical credentials were used without her knowledge to bill for services she didn’t provide in a hospital where she no longer worked. It signaled how inefficient credentialing processes lead to the risk of medical fraud, waste, and abuse of our precious Healthcare dollars. It wasn’t just one individual professional violation. It was a wake-up call to the pervasive need for a solution.
She also saw that the current software solutions designed to make credentialing easier were built only to serve large hospital systems, leaving independent or smaller to medium-sized practices and telemedicine practices without a viable solution. The solutions that did exist were outdated, and did not make doctor’s lives easier. Agentic tools and AI brought an opportunity to automate credentialing and identity management in order to improve workforce mobility for everyone. So together, along with over 600 physician capital partners who supported the vision, she set out to build something better for everyone.

"We’re not just building a company. We’re restoring ownership to the people who save lives for a living."
Why we're building this
Evercred isn’t just another credentialing tool — it’s a transformation in how physicians get to work. Today, doctors and other healthcare professionals and clinical practitioners are solely responsible for maintaining and sharing their credentials — yet there’s no system to organize them before sharing. This disorganization causes costly delays and a $5B bottleneck at the point of sharing, where every credentialing process must begin.
Evercred is the first and only solution that solves this problem at the source.
We’ve built a secure, practitioner-controlled wallet that accurately extracts and organizes the data so it can easily be maintained. The data can then be pre-verified ahead of sharing and kept securely in one well managed place throughout the practitioner’s career. Once shared, credentials can be instantly and perpetually verified across the healthcare ecosystem — cutting months off onboarding timelines and saving over $1M on average per hiring event.
We’re building a trusted, self-sovereign workforce mobility tool that restores physician autonomy, streamlines hiring, and improves access to care — all by freeing practitioners from the administrative burdens that keep them from doing what they do best: treating patients.
Want to join us?
We are growing our community of collaborators, partners, and investors who believe healthcare should work for physicians—not against them.
Whether you’re a clinical practitioner, practice, surgery center, health system, visionary investor, or just someone who’s ready to make healthcare human again—we’d love to hear from you.
After earning her M.D. from Albany Medical College and practicing medicine for over a decade, Dr. Leah Houston launched HPEC—a decentralized identity platform empowering physicians to own and control their credentials.
While our initial prototype didn’t reach full scale, it laid the groundwork for something stronger: Evercred—an end-to-end credentialing engine that keeps the physician in control of their pre-verified, portable, and tamper-proof credentials. Evercred not only serves practitioners but also supports credential verifiers across the healthcare ecosystem, including private practices, surgery centers, telemedicine platforms, and hospitals.
At its core, HPEC, Inc. stands for autonomy and freedom—freedom from uncompensated administrative burdens and the right to control your professional destiny. Our long-term vision is a decentralized, open-access physician marketplace powered by permanently verifiable credentials, enabling instantaneous workforce mobility and restoring agency to those who deliver care.
